pro-gun legislation TN handgun legislation was passed in 2011

Hi, a belated Happy New Year to you!

As you are probably aware, not too much TN handgun legislation was passed in 2011.

On March 31, 2011, Governor Bill Haslam signed Senate Bill 519 into law.  SB 519, which took immediate effect, recognized that any employer permitting a person to legally carry a firearm on the employer’s property does not constitute an “occupational safety and health hazard” to the employees.  The recognition of Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards by the General Assembly in SB 519 and HB 283 may serve as a stepping stone to the passage of future pro-gun legislation during the 2012 session.

The 2012 TN Legislature is now in session.  You can monitor Tennessee and nationwide legislative activities by going to: https://secure.nraila.org/EmailSignup.aspx  and signing up for NRA e-mail notifications of pending legislation.

Nationally, on Wednesday, Nov. 16, the ongoing effort to fully vindicate the fundamental, individual right to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense took a major step forward with House passage of H.R. 822, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011.” The bill, sponsored by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), which has 245 cosponsors, was approved by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 272-154.  This bill now has to be passed in the Senate and signed by the President (or passed over his veto) to become law.  Contact your U.S. Senator!
